Fall Educational Excursion to Chicago
Wednesday, October 25, 2017
(Deadline for Reservations: October 10)

How many of you have explored the Hyde Park area of Chicago, home to the University of Chicago, the 1893 Chicago World Exposition, Barack Obama, and the proposed Obama Library? Well this is a great chance to visit several of the unique sites in the area.
The University of Chicago, established in 1890, is a private research university renowned for its academic prowess. Our first stop will be the Oriental Institute, the University’s Interdisciplinary research center and archeological museum specializing in the ancient civilizations of the Middle East. We will have a docent-led tour of its notable artifacts from digs in Egypt, Israel, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran.

The Frederick Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright
Built in 1910 this is a fully restored prime example of Wright’s Prairie School style of architecture.  It is located on the U of C campus in Hyde Park on the south side of Chicago.

Rockefeller Chapel is next and we’ll learn the history of this Collegiate Gothic architecture. We will also be treated to the noon 72-bell carillon concert prior to lunch. Lunch will be at the Hutchinson Commons, a popular eating venue in the Reynolds Club Student Union at the university, where we will enjoy the gothic architecture of the building (constructed in 1901).
After lunch we will tour the Frederick C. Robie House at 5757 S. Woodlawn Avenue. Built between 1909 and 1910, the building was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is renowned as the greatest example of the Prairie School style, the first architectural style considered uniquely American. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 27, 1963 and was on the very first National Register of Historic Places list of October 15, 1966
Our final event will be a bus tour of the University campus and surrounding area led by a docent from the Chicago Architectural Foundation. The University of Chicago is unique in its blend of Collegiate Gothic to Contemporary buildings designed by some of the most forward-thinking and well-respected designers in the world.
Deadline for reservations is October 10, 2017 or when bus is full. Please register early so you do not miss out!
